Science- Today we tried to finish some of our “living/non-living” Seesaw posters. We also started one last life cycle project where the students researched an animal (On Epic) that they were interested in, and then showed me that animal’s life cycle.

Phys Ed- We went outside, got blown over, and practiced our backwards jumping! We used the hopscotch stations and practiced going backwards instead of forwards!

Health- We talked about special friends today. The students filled out one of their “All About Me” booklet pages and drew their own special friend and wrote their name.

Math Carpet Time- Callie was our helper today

Notes

Talking Circle- We are going to be starting our star of the week student next week, so this morning we practiced saying something nice about our own families to prepare. During our star of the week talking circle, each kid will be asked to say something nice about that star student. I like to call this a “warm and fuzzy” circle because it makes the star of the week feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Ms. Hendry

Social- We talked about community helpers today. We have a list of so many people in our community who help in different ways. There are storekeepers, medical professionals, police, school based helpers, spiritual leaders, artists, trades people, bus drivers, maintenance workers etc. This morning we were very lucky to get to FaceTime a spiritual leader and a trades worker! We Facetimed a pastor named Pastor Luke, and we actually Facetimed “Mr. Maley” (my husband) who is a carpenter. We asked them both how they help the community, and we got to ask them some questions. Next week we will be Facetiming with a police officer, medical professional and hopefully a store keeper! The students loved it, and afterwards they could draw a picture of how either person helps our community. We sent these to Seesaw.

Daily 5- We built up our Read to Self Stamina today. We added a new centre to “Work on Writing.” We learned a new way to Listen to Reading which is using Raz Kids. Thanks to the SCC for helping purchase this subscription for our class! To access Raz Kids at home, go to www.raz-kids.com (Or download the Raz Kids app) Click “Kids Login,” and type in my teacher code which is dmaley  You should be able to find your child’s name. The password is a picture of a bunny for everyone. Here they can read books at their level throughout the year. They can take quizzes, and earn stars to personalize their robot/spaceship. If you have any questions about Raz Kids, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Phys Ed- I did a jumping and running assessment with the kids today. It was very windy outside, but we managed! Good news! Starting in October we will be allowed to use the gymnasium again!

Health- We talked about different things that we are born with/ versus things we “get later on.” Ex: Hair colour, skin colour, belly buttons, culture, religion. We also talked about how when we are born, humans only have one communication skill, and that is crying. As we grow older we learn how to communicate in so many ways. Today we practiced gestures, facial expressions, drawings and written words. The kids LOVED guessing what I was saying without me talking. I think they think I should just stop talking and only teach using hand motions from now on!

*Reminder that tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day

**Just a note that on October 1st, the student’s table spots/carpet spots/iPads and mini cohorts will be switching. We are under guidance of public health to keep all of the seating plans accurate and static, so I will only be switching these every month- but technically the kids will be with this new little group for the entire month until November.

Math Carpet Time- Kaedin was our helper today.

Notes- I handed out this week’s new math worksheets. They put them in their duotangs, and we talked about how they can choose to do the “papers” centre any time this week! I asked them to hand in any homework they had from this weekend. If your child forgot to bring back their red duotang, please send it tomorrow!

Math Centres- We made it through two rotations today. I pulled the last of our students to practice writing/printing numbers. If your child is still having trouble, I might send home an extra practice worksheet to work on at home. They can finish it at home and send it back and I will give them a “star.” (10 stars and you get a prize.)

I also started pulling some kids to work on/assess their patterning. You will start to see these evaluations/assessments start showing up in Gradebook/Parent Portal. If you don’t have access to Parent Portal yet for your child (our online report card system) please send me an email and we can send home your child’s unique access code so you can see how they are doing.

Snack

Social Studies- We have been talking about different cultural celebrations/holidays etc. Today the students finished their Seesaw assignment on which holidays they celebrate.

Daily 5- We read the third Knuffle Bunny book by Mo Willems. The students have really liked this trilogy if anyone is thinking about buying books for birthdays or Christmas. They aren’t on Scholastic unfortunately, but I’m sure Chapters or Amazon would have them!

Work on Writing- We did our very first journal entry today. The students got to tell me about a time they either lost something, or gave something away.

Math Carpet Time- Oliver was our helper today

Notes

Math Centres- We learned a new “dot stick flash” game. I also pulled children to work on their number formation/printing. The students have a choice of difference centres every day during math centres. I have three categories for the month of September: patterning, number sense, and subitizing. Each of my smaller cohorts stays in one of those categories for 20 minutes, and then rotates. Within each of those categories, there is an app, a paper activity, or three games they can choose from.  The students have about 2-3 pages of paper work every week, but I never force them to choose that centre if they don’t want to.  However, on the last day of the week, if they haven’t chosen the paper work centre yet, they have to do it during our last centres rotation. So… today was that day! So if some of your children have a bit of math homework, it’s because they didn’t quite finish it in class this week, and they have to finish it at home. As a rule, I DO NOT like sending homework home, or think it’s overly valuable. However, considering our math centres are all hands on, the kids DO need to practice some paper work to work on their printing/writing of numbers etc. So, that said, it is up to your child. If they are not going to choose the paper work centre at all during the week, which is 4 hours of math centres, that is fine. It just means they will be expected to do it on the last centres day, and they might have homework if they don’t finish it then. Hope that makes sense!

Snack

Science- We played a fun animal parent/baby game on the interactive whiteboard today. Your child can play it at home on a computer if they would like! Here is the link. The students had a card in their hand, and they had to find out who their parent or their baby was.

Phys Ed- We went outside to play a hopping game. We called in Shark Attack

Science- Today we finished our living/non-living Seesaw assignments. You should be able to check them out on Seesaw soon!

Phys Ed- We practiced jumping from 2 feet to 1 foot and vice versa! I wasn’t able to get a picture of everyone, but got a few!

Health- We have been talking about emotions and relationships. Today we had a talking circle where the kids shared stories of a time that someone was a good friend to them! It was so nice to hear stories about kids being kind. Some of the stories were even about kids from our class!

*Picture day is tomorrow! Students can dress up if they would like, but they don’t have to. I will try my best to straighten collars and fix hair if it gets a little mangled throughout the morning!

*Please make sure you have sent a water bottle for your child. Maybe even buy some cheap extra ones at home just in case. Some kids have already lost their water bottles, which I truly don’t know how that happens! The water bottles are only in their bags on the way to school and then on their desks. That being said, there are sometimes little single use dixie cups beside the water bottle fill station, but as soon as they are used, there is no other way for your child to get water during the day. 🙁 Just a heads up!

Daily 5- We got our Read to Self stamina up to 4 minutes, 19 seconds today! We build stamina as a class, so if anyone is off task, I stop the whole class, as I don’t want anyone practicing bad reading habits 🙂 We did Work on Writing, and we worked on our “all about us” books. We also learned a new Word work game called Alphabet soup.

Phys Ed- It was race day! The students did some long distance and short distance running today. They should hopefully sleep well tonight!

Health- We acted out different scenarios where students responded with different emotions- happiness/anger. It was good to see them practicing these very “real life” situations. (How do you respond when someone isn’t playing by the rules? Etc.)
