Math Carpet Time- Isabelle was our helper today.

Notes

Math Centres- We are getting close to knowing all of our math centres so we can start giving the kids choice in what centre they will choose. Eventually when the students are working on centres, that is when I will be pulling kids to work with them and assess/evaluate where they are at!

Twitter/Snack- If you are on Twitter, don’t forget to check out our Twitter handle @mrsmaleysclass

Science- We went outside today and took pictures of living/non living things. We then came back and worked on a Seesaw assignment where they categorized pictures into living/non-living.

Health- We talked about our feelings and practiced showing our feelings on our faces and bodies, and recognizing them on others.

*I have a favour to ask! I am going to be adding a post office centre to our classroom, and I seem to be all out of my usual cards/stationary. If anyone has some extra old cards/stationary at home that they are willing to part with, please send it to school with your child, and we will put it into the post office where the kids can practice their writing over the next few weeks!

*If you could have your child use the washroom before the leave for school, or get on the bus, that would be awesome. Without a morning/afternoon recess, the bathroom parade is getting pretty bad. With covid, the students are only allowed to go one at a time. I ALWAYS let the kids go and I will never say no to a bathroom, but sometimes they have to wait for 2 or 3 students who asked before them to go. So just a helpful thought!

We made it through the first week! What a great way to start the school year. I had an appointment this morning, so there was a substitute for their first half of the day! She was an intern at Plainsview last year, so knew the school and the set up! She did great.

Math- The students worked on a couple number sense worksheets. Mostly counting the objects and then writing the numbers in.

Math Centres- The students learned a new math game today called Dot Card War. It’s just like war you would play with cards, but with dot cards!

Arts Ed- The students got a chance to decorate their math name tags today. If they finished early, they got to explore our classroom library and read/look at books.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, September 10, 2020

We had another great day today! I will list the apps that we have been using in class, just in case anyone wants to download them at home so the kids can show you what we are doing, or if they want to bring their own idevice to school.

Math Carpet Time- We used the app, Hundreds Board (By BrainingCamp) to find how many days at school we have been here for. We then looked at a subitizing app (Little Monkey app) Subitizing is finding out how many dots without counting. This is a pre-addition skill that helps us really solidify our numbers combined to ten. We then looked at patterning. (Pattern Blocks by Brainingcamp) Grade ones worked on making a repeating pattern, and our grade twos worked on an increasing pattern.

Math Centres- We learned a new math centre today called Dot Card War. It’s just like war you would play with cards, but with dot cards!

Snack/Twitter- Today we got a chance to look at our class Twitter account, @mrsmaleysclass The students sent out their first tweet today. We use Twitter as a sharing tool. We follow other classes who are doing cool things, and other classes/parents/grandparents follow us! We never use pictures/names together for the children’s safety.

Arts Ed- The students got a chance to decorate their math name tags today. If they finished early, they coloured a back to school picture.

Daily 5- We learned all about good fit books and good fit shoes! You can ask how those two things are similar! The students picked a few good books for their book boxes, and we practiced building stamina for reading to self. Today we made it 1 minute and 40 seconds without anyone getting distracted or stopping reading. We will keep working on building our reading stamina as a class. We have talked about how there are three ways to read. 1) Read the pictures. 2) Read the words. 3) Re-tell a story. Your child can practice any one of these at home.

Ms. Hendry- Ms. Hendry will be teaching the children French and Arts Ed this year.

Wednesday, September 9, First Day of School!

It was a great first day with our L-Z students! We had a bigger group today, and it was great to get to know them. Here was what our day looked like!

Put away supplies

Take a tour of the school

Snack Time

Quiet Time

Arts Ed- We did a couple of first day of school colouring pages. It was nice to see them take care in their colouring and get back to things after so long away!

Lunch recess

Lunch

Carpet Time- We learned how to use the iPads today. I have a class set- so each child gets one for the whole month. Then we will clean them really well, and switch in October. Today the students learned how to play hangman with letters and sounds, and to write a “cage word” properly. Feel free to ask if they know what a cage word is!

Science- We went outside and talked about our favourite animals.  The students then got a chance to draw their favourite animal!

We came in and coloured the pictures that had been drawn outside.

Health- We watched this video about how to wash our hands properly.

We then went and practiced all the steps to washing our hands!

Phys Ed- We went outside and played a fun game of cat and mouse for Phys Ed!

Home Time

* Please know that I tried my best to explain about masks. There are definitely some parents who want their children to wear them, and there are some that aren’t as concerned. We talked as a class about how it’s important that you do what your family/parents want you to do. That said, it’s going to be a bit of building stamina right now, as I noticed it was quite hard for some students to wear them all day. So we definitely took mask breaks, and I reminded them again, that while I am in my 6 foot bubble, even I can take it off so I can teach and have them see my face and lips!

First Day of School! Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Welcome back to school!

We had a great first day with half of our students. Every day I will be posting my day plan of what we did. This is so that when you ask your child, “What did you do today?” and they say, “nothing,” you will have some follow up questions! How did you like _______? I hear that you ________ today.

Supplies away- We organized our supplies today. We will be keeping one marker/pencil box on the desk with our main supplies- markers, pencils, glue stick scissors. All the rest of our supplies will be in a grey bucket in a shelf in our class.

Tour- We took a school tour and talked about some of the things that might have changed since last year! (Gym closed for now, no soft furniture etc.)

Arts Ed- Ms. Hendry

Lunch

Carpet Time- We will be using technology in our classroom this year, and the students were introduced to the classroom iPads. They each will have one iPad that they use for a month. These are iPads that I have purchased, or have been donated to me. They only have learning apps on them, and we will be using them at certain times in the day to support direct teaching. I will be training the students on proper use and digital citizenship!

Science- We went outside to the rock circle to talk about our favourite animals. They drew pictures of the animals.

Health- We watched the “how to wash your hands” video that reinforced good hand hygiene.

Phys Ed- We went outside to play cat and mouse.

Home Time

*Please check out the notes that were sent home today. There is one that needs to be filled out and sent back!

**Reminder that there are NO toys or stuffed animals allowed at school. That’s a general school rule, but especially now with covid. I reminded the kids today, but please let them know at home too!
