Social Studies- Today we reflected on our last lesson about residential schools. Since our First Nation’s ancestors had their language taken away, we tried to revitalize it today by learning some Cree words. We have a couple neat Cree apps where the students could learn new words and play a game with it.

Halloween Party- I am so sorry! We were having so much fun, and I totally forgot to take pictures! We started off with a dance party. Then we had some of our treats. We played a couple Halloween Kahoot games. We then played a version of 7-Up called Ghosts Up.

Home Time

*Next Friday, November 6th is Plainsview Dress Up day. Students can wear the school’s colours- blue, black or white!

** Please sign up for a parent/teacher conference spot if you haven’t already!

***Unfortunately I found out that Hotmail/Outlook have been blocking Edublogs from the daily emails. So if you have subscribed to the blog with a Hotmail/Outlook account, that is why you have not been getting the daily blog emails! If you have another email (something like Gmail) that you would like to subscribe with, it will work. If not, I have Edublogs working on it, and they will do a run around using the Mail Chimp site. It just might come in the next couple weeks. Thanks!

Lunch

ELA carpet time- This week we have been learning about how to blend consonants together when we are sounding out words. For example, instead of sounding out an individual s sound and a t sound. When they are together, I encourage the kids to say “st.” This helps the kids to chunk words into more manageable parts. Try it at home!

Daily 5- Read to Self- We made it 6 minutes today.

Work on Writing- We worked on a pumpkin missing sound page.

Listen to Reading

Phys Ed- We played a catching game called “Ghosts and Pumpkins.”

Health- We talked about using respectful language today. The students started a Seesaw activity where they gave example of words of respect.

Home Time

*Tomorrow is Halloween dress up day. Students can bring one or two treats for themselves, but none for classmates.

**Please feel free to take a look at the November parent/teacher conference sign up.

Wednesday, October 28

Morning Carpet Time- Hannah was our helper today

Notes- I sent home the student’s All About Me booklet as it is marked and finished. They can keep that at home.  I also sent home a couple corrections to students who need to work on their sight word, “away” page from yesterday.

Math Centres- We learned a new centre called cup count today. It is supposed to help the students with their understanding of equality.

I pulled grade 1’s to work on rote counting. I pulled grade 2’s to work on estimating.

Social-  Last day in Social Studies, we had talked about my own Settler genealogy and how I, as a White Settler, still benefit from the treaties that were signed hundred of years ago. Today we moved to a sad part of Canadian history- the residential schools. I tried to be very sensitive, and let the kids know that this part of history is quite sad. We talked about how the kids weren’t allowed to speak their Indigenous languages, and how hard that would be. At the end of the lesson, I did a little language activity to help the students understand what it was like to be thrown into a situation where they didn’t know the language being spoken. I made up my own language and asked the kids to colour certain shapes in my made up language colours. The kids were guessing at what marker to use, and they didn’t have a clue! At the end, I told them the actual colours I was asking for, and rewarded those kids who happened to get it right. (They got a little Halloween sticker.) I asked the other students how it made them feel when they didn’t get a sticker. There were lots of words like “unfair,” and “disappointing.” We connected this to how First Nations children would have felt while at residential schools. It would have been frustrating and overwhelming to not be able to speak their own language. Overall, the lesson went really well and I think the students showed a lot of empathy. HOWEVER, I may have made the language activity a bit too fun, because on the way out for recess, I heard a student say “Let’s play residential schools at recess!” I stopped in my tracks and gasped, “No! Ahh! It’s not a game! That was just to help you understand the students not speaking the language!” I was mortified! So hopefully if you debrief at home, you can remind them this is still a serious point in history, and likely something that shouldn’t be played at recess lol!

Morning Carpet Time- Lynyx was our helper

Notes

Math Centres- We are moving onto a new equality unit, so the students are learning the beginnings of addition and subtraction/things that are equal.

Snack

Science- We watched the beginnings of a video called “The Secret World of Plants.” The kids got to learn about some really neat plants on this earth. They picked their favourite one and drew a picture of it. If they didn’t have time to finish colouring, I told them they could take it home for homework.

*We have been given direction from the division that we are NOT allowed to hand out candy/special treats this year on our Halloween dress up day this Friday. If you want to bring your child their *own* treat for Friday, we will have a time in the afternoon where we can have an “eat your own treat” time. Students are allowed to dress up as long as their costume does not have weapons.

**November 19th is parent/teacher virtual conferences. Here is a sign up so that you can sign up for a parent teacher conference time that works for you!

Happy Friday!

Math Carpet Time- Kaedin was our helper today

Notes/Mail- Thank you to those who sent the family tree papers back. If you didn’t, no worries! Perhaps you will have time to look at them together as a family over the weekend and send them back Tuesday!

Math Centres- The second half of math centres we did our paper work today. (If they weren’t done.) Please check your child’s backpack for a red duotang. Any page that says fix or do needs to be done. Anything with a check mark is complete!

Centres- The students had play centres today. I kept reading testing. I am almost finished testing the students. I tell each child their level, so you can always ask your child if they know what level they are reading at. This is because we have some levelled books in the class, and it helps the students have some good fit books in their book boxes at all times!

Social- We read the book, We Are All Treaty People today. I walked the students through my own personal Settler history and told them how my great great grandparents benefited from Treaties when they came over from Europe. The students tried to fill out their own family tree the best they could, and I told them to ask you about their family history. They brought home their family tree so you can help them when you get a minute! I also told them they could ask you if your family were Settlers or First Nations/Indigenous.

Phys Ed- We worked on the twisting movement today!

Health- We finished our bullying skits today.

Home Time

*Monday is a PD Day

*Tuesday is retake day

*Friday is a Halloween dress up day if the students want.

Lunch- Just a reminder that healthy lunches look different, but examples of healthy lunches might be: a sandwich, leftovers from supper the night before, bagel/bun, crackers with meat/cheese, etc. Please try and send lunches that would fill your child up with “the good stuff” and then we don’t mind if there are little treats for the extras. It is also SO important that your child has a water bottle each day. The water fountains are turned off, and SOMETIMES we have little dixie cups beside the water fountain for the kids that forgot, but most days there isn’t.

ELA Carpet Time

Daily 5 Read to self- We made it to 7 minutes of stamina

Word Work- The students played sight word Bingo today.

Listen to Reading

Phys Ed- Instead of going to the gym today, we worked on balancing through yoga in the classroom. The students tried out 5 different poses to see if they could balance.

Health- We read a children’s book about bullying and then they acted out some scenarios.

Math Carpet Time- Alexis was our helper today

Notes/Mail

Math Centres- I started working with students on “Number Sense” rather than patterning today. The students practiced counting by 1s, 2s, and 5s. If you know your child doesn’t know how to skip count in these ways, now would be a great time to practice this in the car or before supper etc!

Snack

Social Studies- We moved on in history in our First Nation’s unit. We talked about Treaties today. We talked about how the government and First Nations people entered into a promise that was meant to last as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the river flows. We talked about what the government/Europeans thought they were getting out of the Treaty (peace from FN, land) and what the First Nations/Indigenous people thought they were getting from the government (education, healthcare, and food rations). The students pretended they were living during that time and they were asked to be the official flag designer for Treaty 4. They got to design their own flag that would represent the Treaties. They are beautiful!

We even got to check out the Treaty 4 flag that is flying on our flag pole.
