Math Carpet Time- Oliver was our helper today

Notes

Math Centres- We learned a new “dot stick flash” game. I also pulled children to work on their number formation/printing. The students have a choice of difference centres every day during math centres. I have three categories for the month of September: patterning, number sense, and subitizing. Each of my smaller cohorts stays in one of those categories for 20 minutes, and then rotates. Within each of those categories, there is an app, a paper activity, or three games they can choose from.  The students have about 2-3 pages of paper work every week, but I never force them to choose that centre if they don’t want to.  However, on the last day of the week, if they haven’t chosen the paper work centre yet, they have to do it during our last centres rotation. So… today was that day! So if some of your children have a bit of math homework, it’s because they didn’t quite finish it in class this week, and they have to finish it at home. As a rule, I DO NOT like sending homework home, or think it’s overly valuable. However, considering our math centres are all hands on, the kids DO need to practice some paper work to work on their printing/writing of numbers etc. So, that said, it is up to your child. If they are not going to choose the paper work centre at all during the week, which is 4 hours of math centres, that is fine. It just means they will be expected to do it on the last centres day, and they might have homework if they don’t finish it then. Hope that makes sense!

Snack

Science- We played a fun animal parent/baby game on the interactive whiteboard today. Your child can play it at home on a computer if they would like! Here is the link. The students had a card in their hand, and they had to find out who their parent or their baby was.

Daily 5- We learned a few new work on writing and read to self centres. We will be building stamina in all these areas as a class.

Phys Ed- We went outside to play a hopping game. We called in Shark Attack

Health- We watched a little mini video about What is a Community?

We then talked about how we, as a classroom, are a community. We decided that even though we are part of a community, we can still have differences! We celebrated those.

Home Time

*I am still going to put out a call for stationary! If you have any letterhead or cards at home that you could donate, we would love to have them!

Math Carpet Time- Makari was our helper today

Notes

Math Centres- They learned two new centres today, and they actually had 10 minutes to try out their math centres in their mini cohort within the class. Now that they know these centres, they will be able to play them while I can pull kids for small group instruction.

Science- Today we finished our living/non-living Seesaw assignments. You should be able to check them out on Seesaw soon!

Phys Ed- We practiced jumping from 2 feet to 1 foot and vice versa! I wasn’t able to get a picture of everyone, but got a few!

Health- We have been talking about emotions and relationships. Today we had a talking circle where the kids shared stories of a time that someone was a good friend to them! It was so nice to hear stories about kids being kind. Some of the stories were even about kids from our class!

*Picture day is tomorrow! Students can dress up if they would like, but they don’t have to. I will try my best to straighten collars and fix hair if it gets a little mangled throughout the morning!

*Please make sure you have sent a water bottle for your child. Maybe even buy some cheap extra ones at home just in case. Some kids have already lost their water bottles, which I truly don’t know how that happens! The water bottles are only in their bags on the way to school and then on their desks. That being said, there are sometimes little single use dixie cups beside the water bottle fill station, but as soon as they are used, there is no other way for your child to get water during the day. 🙁 Just a heads up!

Daily 5- We got our Read to Self stamina up to 4 minutes, 19 seconds today! We build stamina as a class, so if anyone is off task, I stop the whole class, as I don’t want anyone practicing bad reading habits 🙂 We did Work on Writing, and we worked on our “all about us” books. We also learned a new Word work game called Alphabet soup.

Phys Ed- It was race day! The students did some long distance and short distance running today. They should hopefully sleep well tonight!

Health- We acted out different scenarios where students responded with different emotions- happiness/anger. It was good to see them practicing these very “real life” situations. (How do you respond when someone isn’t playing by the rules? Etc.)

*Don’t forget that this Wednesday is picture day!

*Have a great weekend! I have been informed that it is possible the parents can’t see their child’s work on Seesaw yet. We do have an assignment posted that you should be able to see, so I will try and get this figured out to make sure everyone can see it!

**Next Friday is a PD Day, so no school for students!

Thursday, September 17, 2020

Math Carpet Time- Isabelle was our helper today.

Notes

Math Centres- We are getting close to knowing all of our math centres so we can start giving the kids choice in what centre they will choose. Eventually when the students are working on centres, that is when I will be pulling kids to work with them and assess/evaluate where they are at!

Twitter/Snack- If you are on Twitter, don’t forget to check out our Twitter handle @mrsmaleysclass

Science- We went outside today and took pictures of living/non living things. We then came back and worked on a Seesaw assignment where they categorized pictures into living/non-living.

Math Centres- we learned a couple new math centres today called Fabulous 5 worm and Terrific 10 snake.

Play Centres- The students got to have some social time today when they rotated through play centres to encourage play, language, and social development.  I have mini cohorts within our classroom so that the kids aren’t playing all together, but only with the people that they are sort of already sitting by.

Health- We talked about our feelings and practiced showing our feelings on our faces and bodies, and recognizing them on others.

*I have a favour to ask! I am going to be adding a post office centre to our classroom, and I seem to be all out of my usual cards/stationary. If anyone has some extra old cards/stationary at home that they are willing to part with, please send it to school with your child, and we will put it into the post office where the kids can practice their writing over the next few weeks!

*If you could have your child use the washroom before the leave for school, or get on the bus, that would be awesome. Without a morning/afternoon recess, the bathroom parade is getting pretty bad. With covid, the students are only allowed to go one at a time. I ALWAYS let the kids go and I will never say no to a bathroom, but sometimes they have to wait for 2 or 3 students who asked before them to go. So just a helpful thought!
