Hope you had a great long weekend!

Math Carpet Time

Notes- I didn’t quite get everyone’s math marked last week on Train Day, so some of the math duotangs I sent home today to work on homework! It would have a little sticker on the front that says, “corrections.”

Math Centres- We added a new math centre today called Osmo Numbers.

Snack

Social Studies- We started our First Nations Unit. Today we talked about Turtle Island and the traditional ways of our First Nation’s people. The students learned about the buffalo, and some traditional FN dwellings. If they didn’t quite finish colouring their buffalo picture, I told them they could take it home to finish and bring it back tomorrow.

*Can you double check with your child that they have headphones? (Even just the dollar store ear buds are fine). I seem to be getting a lot of students borrowing mine every day. I have a couple extras for this purpose, but it’s probably not the best that students are sharing headphones as often as they are. If you know you didn’t send any this year, could you send a pair for your child? We do use them quite often! Thanks!

Today was a train themed day! Today we spent the entire day making sure we all know our letters and sounds! Starting next week, we are going to move on to “decoding.” Decoding is when we begin to learn the rules/patterns of the English language!

The first thing the children had to do was to match the uppercase letter on their ticket to the lowercase seating assignment. (They were still with their mini cohort all day today, just in a new spot in the room!)

The train was showing a special on-board movie today called Leap Frog Letter Factory. (Great video to review letters and sounds if your child needs help with that! It is on Netflix and Youtube.

Arrived at Math Mountain- The students had three centres to work on. Pattern trains, estimating patterning train cars, and a patterning Smartboard activity.

Snack- Our train service provided a complimentary snack for the children today if they wanted one. (Individually wrapped fruit snacks). They continued watching the on-board movie.

Arrived at Makerspace Mountain- Instead of play centres today, the students did some creating! They either made a train out of lego, they got to play with a real train track set, or they were at their table making a train craft! They rotated through these stations.

Continued their onboard movie.

Did some ELA train time! (Rather than on the carpet).

Daily 5- Read to Self- Ms. Preece found us some awesome train books from the library. They were allowed to make their own hula hoop train to read inside.

Listen to Reading- I added a whole bunch of Epic train books to their Epic mailbox.

Work on Writing- There were a couple train writing activities to work on. They could either write the days of the week on a train, or do a vowel train worksheet. I told the students they could bring any of their train stuff home today to show you!

Word Work-The students print the “cage words” they knew on a little train worksheet.

Read to Mrs. Maley- I continued to test student’s reading levels today.

Trip to France- Ms. Hendry taught them French πŸ™‚

Home Time- Grade 2’s were sent the Parent Portal information today in their take home folder. A few students have math homework. (Red duotang).

Have a great weekend! -Conductor Maley

Notes

Math Centres- we learned a few new centres again today. The students really seem to be enjoying these and they seem to be really on task while I am pulling small groups at my desk. If only they knew they are learning while they play! πŸ™‚

Number Bingo- The students had a chance to play number bingo! I showed them the written word number, gave them 10 seconds to read it, and then I read it for them and they covered it if they had it! By the third round, some of them were really recognizing the number words!

Math Carpet Time

Notes- Today the students handed in their math homework. (If they didn’t finish last week’s corrections or assignments, it is still in their backpack). Those that were here on picture day also got their picture proofs.

Math Centres- We learned a new centre today called Domino parking lot. It works with subitizing to 12. I worked with small groups on patterning!

Snack

Social- We had an awesome opportunity to Zoom/Facetime some community helpers today! We called our school resource officer, Constable Strueby and asked him some questions about how he helps the community. We also called our red bus driver, Shelley and asked her about her help with the community!

We will be starting a First Nations unit this month, and so the students listened to a couple books on Epic that talk about Indigenous peoples.

Daily 5- Read to self- We made it to 4 minutes today.

Listen to Reading- Mrs. Maley read a book called “If You’re Thankful and You Know It.” The students really enjoyed it, and they told someone beside them what they were thankful for.

Work on Writing- Today the students journaled. They were allowed to write about whatever they wanted. However, if they didn’t know what to write about, I gave them a prompt that they could follow. It said, “I am thankful for…”

Ms. Hendry

*Just a reminder that the student’s take home folder needs to “live in their backpack.” Please don’t take it out and leave it at home as this is going to help the students keep track of all mail and notes! Thanks!

Math Carpet Time

Notes- Today the parent portal notes went home (online report cards) HOWEVER, it turns out the office only sent the grade ones notes because they assumed the grade twos would be connected from last year. I let the office know that we would like them for the grade 2’s as well. Ms. Belton was away today, so grade 2s will get them when she’s back!

Math Centres- We switched up a couple centres today. There is a new math patterning centre that is played on the Smartboard. We also took out “Fabulous Five Worm” and added a dot to dot/counting centre.

The students who hadn’t worked on their math pages this week had to work on them today during the second rotation of our math centres. Many students finished, but just have some corrections to do. Please check your child’s bag to see if they have any math homework! (red duotang)

Snack

Science- Today we worked on some more living/non-living activities. The students also got to “design/create” their own animal today. It could have wings, feet, legs- whatever they wanted!

Recess

Lunch

ELA Carpet Time- We read the chant, 5 Little Pumpkins today!

Daily 5 Centres- Read to Self- Well, our stamina only made it to 2 minutes 41 seconds today unfortunately. But we will keep working on it!

Work on Writing- Today we did the All About Us page that was about our address. Every year I always remind parents how important it is that their child knows their address. They are in grade 1 and 2 right now, so they DEFINITELY need to know it. I gave them a copy of it today, so they could practice spelling it, but please make sure your child knows their address! (And phone number for that matter).

Word Work- We learned a new centre today called Write the Room.

Ms. Hendry

Home Time

*I have a special day planned for the students on Friday, October 9th. Shh! It’s top secret! However, I know it is the Friday before the long weekend. Could you let me know if you plan on not being here on that Friday? Holidays etc. If there are too many kids missing, I will plan it for the Thursday instead. Just send me an email! Thanks!

Happy weekend!

Thursday, October 1, 2020

It’s October! That means we switched seating plans, iPads, and mini cohorts.

Play Centres- The students got to play in different centres today while I tested letters/sounds with kids.

Lunch

ELA Carpet Time- We added a part to our routine today that is all about being Thankful. We are going to be practicing thankfulness and gratitude every day this month!

Daily 5- The students worked through Read to self, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading, and Work with Mrs. Maley. It was also really nice to have our LRT, Mrs. Papp in the room during this hour to help out the kids that were working on centres.

Phys Ed- We got to use the gym again today! It was glorious! Especially after yesterday where we literally were getting blown over!

Health- Today we talked about having healthy minds and emotions. We had a talking circle where the kids shared something they love about themselves. It was so precious hearing them share with the class something they loved. We could learn from them as adults I think!

Home Time

*I am so sorry! I was supposed to send Parent Portal notes home today at the end of the day, and I totally forgot! I will send them tomorrow! Thanks for your patience with me! I am also going to be sending home a “take home folder.” This is a little folder where you can send notes and I can send notes so they don’t get bent or lost in their bag. We will tell the kids that this folder can “live in their backpack.”

** I also found out that picture retakes are on Tuesday, October 27th in the am! Mark your calendars if you need to!
