Notes/Mail/Home Reading

Math Centres/Finished our red duotangs. If your child’s red duotang was sent home, they have some homework to do or corrections.

Social Studies- Today we used Google Earth to look at our continent, country, province and city. We also looked at where our clothes were made. The students had a blast trying to find the “made in” on their tags and then typing in the country.  Students self isolating can download the free Google Earth app or use a Web browser for the Google Earth website and hunt for where their clothes are made!

Assembly- We had a STORM values assembly today where we honoured certain students for showing honesty and always telling the truth. Congratulations Kaedin and Gabby!

Daily 5 Listen to Reading- We read Chapter 12 of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe today.

Daily 5- Guided Reading- Students self isolating can just do their reading through Raz Kids. See yesterday’s post for instructions.

Ms. Hendry

Home Time- We had a fun hat day today! I am sorry, I didn’t even take any pictures!

Math Carpet Time- Those who are self isolating, please check Seesaw for some math videos. Students can follow along with a whiteboard/paper/idevice at home. The Hundreds board app we use is here. There is a free website that has something similar and can be found here. You Tube video for counting by 10s is below. Base ten website Free base ten app Base ten app we use in class

Notes/Mail- Home reading

Math Centres- We were able to make it through 2 rotations today.

Science- We worked at finishing our pictures of how humans sometimes hurt animals (Cutting down their forests so they end up displaced.) And how humans sometimes help animals (Things like caring for an orphaned animal and releasing it back to the wild once it has been rehabilitated.) Once we finished that picture, the students went under the student announcement section of Seesaw and watched the animals and what they eat video, and then played the matching game. Students who are self isolating can draw their own helping/hurting picture and send it to Seesaw. They can also watch the animal video and play the game. (Both of these are under the student inbox)

Daily 5 Listen to Reading – Chapter 11 of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Parents of students who are self isolating: Here is the book online. If you want to keep up with our readings, you can read the chapter that we are on! By the way, I change the word ‘sledge’ to sled so the kids know what I’m talking about!

Read to Self- We made it 12 minutes, 4 seconds today!

Work on Writing- The students worked on their book today. Today we wrote about the problem in their story. For example, last day we worked on the character’s goal. The mean witch in the class’s story wanted to win a trophy. So today, the class decided that the problem of the story was that our witch was going to cheat.  Our example sentences today said… “One day there was a race in town. The witch decided she was going to cheat.” Next class we will add onto the problem of how the witch decided to cheat. Parents of students who are self isolating: You can have your child write their sentences down on paper or in a Seesaw post and send it to me through Seesaw. They can copy these sentences into their book when they are back to school.

*Tomorrow is hat/crazy hair day. Apparently the students can wear a hat OR they can do their hair crazy.

** Anyone who has not accessed Raz Kids yet, should probably do that in the next little while! Now is a great time. You never know if we will end up online, and it will be a nice tool in your belt if you need it!

Step 1) go to www.raz-kids.com

Step 2) Click on Kids login

Step 3) Type dmaley for the teacher username

Step 4) Click your child’s name

Step 5) Their password is the bunny picture.

Step 6) Click on reading room and then leveled books (at the top). OR click Level up. (That will automatically take them to their assigned level.)

Step 7) Your child can click the headphones to listen to the story first, and then click the book to read it out loud themselves. They earn stars for every book they read. They can spend those stars in the “star zone.”

Math Carpet Time- Aubree was our helper today

Notes/Mail- I sent home the student’s penguin sight word worksheet they worked on with the sub the other day. A couple re-take picture orders went home, and if your child brought back their home reading, they received a new book. If they didn’t no worries! No pressure. Whenever they bring it back, they can exchange then. There is no rush.

Math Centres- We learned a new math centre today. It was called “sticky problems.” The students got to use sticky notes to cover up one part of an addition problem, and the partner had to tell them the number that was hidden. This is an easy game to play at home. Write down something like 7=4+3  Cover up either the 7, the 4 or the 3, and the child needs to tell you what is underneath.

Snack

Makerspace- Today we used clay for our Makerspace medium. The students had a blast creating different things with it. It sounds like some of you might even be in for a gift or two!

ELA Carpet Time- We looked at dominant r/rhino r again today. The r takes over the vowel and makes it say rrrrrr.

Daily 5 Listen to Reading- We finished chapter 10 of Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe today.

Daily 5 Centres- I worked with a couple guided reading groups.

Phys Ed- We worked on our passing and receiving skills with soccer balls today.

Health- We watched a brush your teeth video and finished our Venn diagrams for those who weren’t done.

Home Time

*As most of you know, there has been another positive case of covid at Plainsview. That classroom is isolating, and only close contacts of that person will need to self isolate. Those people will have been contacted directly from SHA. Because there are some close contacts in our class, I am going to try and video tape my Math carpet time and my ELA carpet time for the students at home to watch. I will get our EA, Mr. W, to videotape me. Though he will try and only get myself and the helper of the day in the frame, I need to know if anyone does not want their child to be videotaped. The video would only be posted for the few students who are self isolating at home, but with privacy issues, I need to know if anyone has an issue with this. Please send me an email if you feel this might be a problem.

Here are the documents to remind everyone of the covid precautions and guidelines.

Math Carpet Time- Bentley was our helper today.

Mail/Notes- I decided to start home reading this week instead of waiting until next! Your child has a leveled book in their take home folder today. I included a reading strategies bookmark, and for those that need to work on their sight words, I included the Dolch sight word list flash cards. How the home reading program is going to work, is that every night your child READS their book, they can write the name of the book onto the Menchie’s bookmark. Once they have read 10 books, they can take it to the Menchies on Rochdale and turn it in for a free frozen yogurt. I want the Menchie’s bookmark to be for books that the students have read- not just flipping through pictures or being read to. Please encourage your child to sound out the words, use their reading strategies and try to read those leveled books!

Math Centres- We learned a new centre today. It was called Make 10 Go Fish. It’s played the exact same way as Go Fish, however the child needed to ask for the make 10 partner. 7 and 3, 6 and 4 etc.

I worked with the grade 1 students today on skip counting and finding an error in my counting.

Notes/Mail- The student’s personal and social growth rubrics went home today. If you login to Parent Portal, you will be able to see the comments that go along with the marks. If you remember, the parent codes for parent portal went home in a sealed envelope at the beginning of the year. If you or your child has misplaced this information, you will have to call the office and get it from Ms. Belton!
